Garage door painting
Garage door painting in Melbourne
The garage door is often a third of what you see from the street, and it weathers faster than any wall. Repainting one costs a fraction of replacing it, if the prep is done properly. We assess the existing finish before quoting the preparation.
A recent job
Garage door strip and refinish
This door came to us with the coating failing in patches. The sun side had faded to bare timber grain while the rest held on. The failing coating needed removing first. We stripped it back, primed the lot, and recoated it as one surface.
- Old coating stripped where it had failed, not feathered over
- Primed for the material: timber, Colorbond and zincalume each need a different primer
- Finished in a colour chosen to suit the house
What we paint
Sectional and panel-lift doors, roller doors, tilt doors, and timber or timber-look doors. Metal doors mostly fail by fading and chalking; timber and timber-look finishes fail by peeling, usually on the sun side first. Both can be saved, and both look like new doors from the street when they're done.
One thing we'll flag at the quote: a door with rust eating through the panels, or timber gone soft, is past painting. If that's what we find, you'll hear it before you spend anything.
Why doors fail faster than walls
A north- or west-facing door takes full sun most of the day, heats the coating, and then flexes every time it opens. Factory finishes are thin. Once they chalk, every wash takes a little more colour off. Repainting with the right prep and a coating made for the movement helps the new finish last.
What it involves
Wash and degrease, strip or sand back anything failing, treat any surface rust, then the right primer and two coats in the finish the door needs. Tracks, seals and windows get masked off, not painted. A single door is usually done in a day and usable again that evening.
What affects the price
Size and type start it. A double sectional door has more surface and far more panel edges than a single tilt door, and a roller door is priced by the curtain, which has to be run down and coated in sections rather than sprayed as one face. The primer needs to suit the door material. Timber, Colorbond and zincalume each need a different one, so we select one to match the surface. Then condition: a door needing a sand and two coats is a different job from one where the coating has failed on the sun side and has to come back to bare. A colour change adds a coat. Two doors cost noticeably less than twice one, because the setup only happens once.
