Feature walls
Feature walls and panelling in Melbourne
We paint feature walls, brickwork and panelling. Dark colours need careful surface preparation and neat edges, particularly where they meet a lighter wall or ceiling.
A recent job
Deep navy panelling, crisp to the ceiling line
Panelled walls in a deep navy against a parquet-patterned ceiling, the kind of finish where every edge shows. Dark colours can show roller texture, uneven sanding and wavy edges, so the surface needs careful preparation.
- Surfaces sanded and primed so dark colour lays down flat, not patchy
- Edges cut sharp by hand, with no tape lines and no bleed
- Floors and joinery sheeted the whole time
What counts as a feature
A single bold wall, painted brick or blockwork, wainscoting and panel mouldings, a dark ceiling, two-tone walls with a set line: anything where the finish is the point. We also paint interior brick, which behaves like a different material entirely and gets treated like one.
Preparing for dark colours
Deep colours show roller texture, patchy sheen and every filled hole that wasn't sanded flat. They need a tinted undercoat, or the topcoat count doubles. And they need edges cut by a steady hand, because a wavy line against a light ceiling is visible from the doorway. We allow time for that preparation in the quote.
Booking a feature wall
A feature wall is often a one-day job, and can fit between larger jobs. We slot them between larger jobs, with the same written quote, the same drop sheets and the same clean-up. If you're still tossing up colours, that conversation is part of the free quote.
What affects the price
The colour and surface condition affect the price of a feature wall. Deep, saturated colours need a tinted undercoat and more coats to lay down flat, so the same wall in navy costs more than the same wall in off-white. Surface is the other half: flat plaster is quick, painted brick drinks paint and takes far longer to cut in around, and panelling is priced by its profiles rather than its square metres. If the panelling has to go up as well as be painted, that's carpentry before it's painting, and it's quoted as both. After that it's ceiling height, how much furniture has to move, and whether the surrounding walls and ceiling are being done at the same time. We can quote the surrounding walls and ceiling if they also need repainting.
