Before and after painting
Preparing for painting, and caring for the finish
A little planning helps the work fit around your home. Agree the arrangements with the crew before moving heavy items or preparing surfaces yourself.
Before the crew arrives
- Furniture and belongings. Agree who moves large items and where they can go. Clear personal items, fragile objects and valuables from the agreed work areas.
- Wall fittings. Discuss pictures, hooks, curtains and blinds. Let the crew know which holes should remain and which should be filled.
- Access. Agree arrival arrangements, keys, parking and which entrances need to stay available. For apartments, confirm building access hours and any lift bookings.
- Children and pets. Plan a separate area away from work, equipment and wet coatings. Tell the crew about pets and any access needs before the day.
- Known issues. Mention leaks, recurring stains, peeling paint or previous coating problems. Ask before doing your own sanding, stripping or repairs.
While painting is underway
Agree the room order and check with the crew before entering a work area, moving coverings or returning furniture. Tell them which rooms or paths you need to use so the work can be planned around that.
For exterior work, discuss access to doors, windows, gates and outdoor areas. Keep vehicles and movable garden items clear of the agreed work area. Weather may affect the sequence; ask when the next update will be given.
Tell the crew about ventilation concerns or particular household needs before work starts. Follow the product instructions and the crew's advice about ventilation and returning to a freshly painted area.
Dry, ready for another coat, and cured are different
A surface that feels dry may not be ready for normal use, cleaning or another coat. Those stages depend on the exact coating and application conditions. There is no single drying or curing time that covers walls, cabinets, decks, floors and pools.
At handover, ask for the product name and the relevant care instructions. Confirm when you can move furniture back, close painted doors or windows, hang items, clean the surface or resume normal use. For specialist coatings, ask specifically about foot traffic, vehicles, water exposure or refilling.
If the instructions are unclear or conditions change, contact the crew before using or cleaning the surface. Follow the manufacturer's guidance for the product used.
Cleaning and touch-ups
Wait until the coating's care instructions permit cleaning. Use the method and products recommended for that finish; ask before using abrasive pads, strong cleaners or pressure washing. Check with the crew if a mark will not come off.
Keep a record of the colour, product and sheen. If a finish is damaged or needs attention, take a clear photo and describe where it is and what happened. Ask the crew about the repair approach before trying a touch-up, as the colour and sheen may not blend invisibly.
